RiverRun Project

Summary

  • RiverRun is a semester-long project of Entertainment Technology Center, Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Team RiverRun is a student team working with Intermediate Unit 1, Colonial Campus, creating a RPG style multiplayer mobile game – “Solidarity”, to help students overcome social and emotional difficulties, especially in the area of communication, through the power of teamwork.
  • The game is set in a Sci-Fi space environment, and each player is an on-board crew member. They have to achieve their goal, which is to defend themselves from alien attacks, by effective verbal communications and cooperations.

  • My Role: 3D Artist, Technical Artist, Effect Artist

  • Created three main characters in the game, player spaceship, enemy spaceship and citizen spaceship. The 3D art assets include models and textures.

  • Added damage effect on both player and citizen spaceship using Unity projector. According to the device condition of the player and the citizen, they will have different levels of damage.

    Effect Design For Games

    Project 01 – Sci-Fi Environment: materials, lighting, camera effects, particle systems

    Individual Project, 4 Weeks

    Take the provided Sci-Fi Level Scene and add materials, lighting, camera effects, particle systems to it. Take the clean environment given and turn it into an environment that has been attacked and brought to the brink of destruction.

    Project 02 – Sewer Environment: materials, lighting, camera effects, particle systems

    Individual Project, 2 Weeks

    Take the provided Sewer Scene and add materials, lighting, camera effects, particle systems to it. Take the clean environment given and turn it into a dirty and wet underground sewer environment.

    Overall Workflow
    Materials

  • Re-build the textures, converting them to Unity 5 Standard shader.
  • Use detail maps to age, add dirt, and damage the environment, such as rust, scratch, wear and tear, blood, moss, broken glass and broken screens.
  • Modify broken glass tube model in Maya to make it more real.
  • Setup some objects that will have emissive materials – light panels and some still functioning screens.
  • Lighting

  • Add source light, bounce light, and fill light.
  • Use real time lighting and light mapping techniques.
  • Script alarm light to flicker.
  • Animate and script ceiling light to swing within the space.
  • Camera Effects

  • Add global fog, bloom optimized, SSAO, color correction, tone mapping, blur optimized effects to the camera.
  • Make some of them triggered by movement.
  • Particle Systems

  • Sparks, triggered by movement and bounced off floor
  • Moving ground fog, effected by movement through it
  • Dust floating in the air
  • Dripping water with triggered sfx
  • Flame lamp
  • Faucet water, splashing on the floor
  • Demon fog, made by sprite material
